Safe working practices will need to be reviewed and physical distancing measures will need to be implemented for factories to be able to open and resume work. However, as a sector, cable manufacturers have an infinite capacity to adapt and discover new ways of working that will enable business to thrive despite the future constraints that need be met. The adoption of Industry 4.0 is suddenly more important than ever. Industry 4.0 and what it means for cable manufacturing has been at the forefront of cable manufacturing conferences and exhibitions for some time, and part of this is the introduction of innovative software solutions, such as Cimteq’s Cable Builder and Cable MES.

Ali Shehab, Cimteq President explains: “The changes this recent crisis will bring across the globe represents a real opportunity for cable manufacturers. As different industries look at doing more online or on a local level, so the need for all types of cable and wire will increase. This will include everything from an increase in local energy generation through to the necessity of great connectivity and communications. The most important thing for cable manufacturers is for them to be ready to be able to meet the increased demand. Now more than ever is it important to invest in the tools to make Industry 4.0 and the Smart factory a reality.”

A staggering 80% of cable costs can be attributed to raw material alone. Reducing the cost of cable production is therefore key in maintaining profitability. And the starting point is cable design. Cimteq’s Cable Builder software manages the complete cycle of cable design and manufacture through typical workflow milestones of Design, Customer Quotation, Ordering, Production, Quality Assurance and ERP system. By consolidating different processes and systems into a single application, Cable Builder delivers three key benefits to cable manufacturers – accurate costings, reduced waste and the automation of labour-intensive tasks. In addition, Cable MES is a manufacturing execution system designed specifically for the wire and cable manufacturing industry, which enables real-time monitoring and control of the cable production.
