Semi-automatic hydraulic unground spring presetting

In the manufacturing of high-performance springs, presetting is a critical step to enhance spring life and performance. This process involves compressing the spring beyond its operating limits to induce a controlled amount of plastic deformation, thereby minimizing further relaxation during use.

This advanced hydraulic spring presetting machine from Italian producer Easydur, is tailored for unground springs and ensures this step is completed efficiently, accurately, and repeatably. It has been developed for handling small to medium volumes (for higher volumes, various fully-automatic solutions are available).

Let’s meet the machine

Resulting from 40 years of experience in the springs world, the machine (fig. 1) is designed with manual spring feeding, allowing operators to load springs individually into a buffer area, which grants a flawless and continuative functioning of the machine.

The springs are then transferred onto a rotating conveyor belt equipped with precision-machined pins, each matched with dedicated spring supports to accommodate various spring geometries. This system ensures correct positioning and prevents misalignment during processing.

The conveyor moves the springs through a sequence of automated stations, which surely are the very “heart” of the system. The first station features a special rotating spring orienting mechanism (fig. 2) which ensures the spring is correctly aligned for compression, regardless of its initial orientation.

Once positioned, the spring moves to the second station, where a hydraulic presser applies controlled force to compress the spring beyond its solid height. This is precisely the action which produces the intentional plastic deformation in the spring material, setting the spring to a defined free height and increasing its load consistency and fatigue life: the main concept behind the action of “presetting”.

Logic and control

The system's PLC-based control ensures precise coordination of all mechanical and hydraulic operations. Parameters can be customized via an intuitive touch screen interface (fig. 3). Operators can create, store, and recall custom recipes for each spring type or production batch, improving efficiency and minimizing setup time between different jobs.

This hydraulic spring presetting machine offers a robust, semi-automated solution that combines the precision of hydraulic force application with intelligent control systems. Its modular design, with adaptable pin supports and a programmable interface, makes it suitable for a wide range of unground compression springs.

By integrating feeding, orienting, presetting, and recipe management in one streamlined process, this machine plays a pivotal role in modern spring production, delivering consistency and enhanced mechanical performance for each spring that passes through it.

So: why choosing a presetting machine?

Easydur has understood that the presetting process improves the performance of unground springs by reducing height loss under load, stabilizing spring behavior under repeated stress, and eliminating early-stage relaxation. As a result, components and products using these springs – whether in automotive, industrial, or consumer applications – benefit from increased reliability and longer service life. In other words: the final product, the spring, acquires a new status, and becomes a high-quality, high-value product.

But before presetting… let’s test some wire

We all know spring producers work with wire, of course, it’s the main “ingredient” when it comes to producing basically any type of spring.

It goes by itself that the wire, whether produced internally, or purchased from third parties, needs to be of the best quality and ensure the highest level of reliability that’s possible.

And the only way to ensure that, is by testing its properties with dedicated instruments. Easydur designs and produces testing systems for every application, and one of the main focus fields is, indeed, wire testing for sectors like wire drawing, spring-making, construction, and a lot more.

With the possibility to choose amongst different structures (single column, double column, vertical, horizontal) and capacities (from a few Newtons to tens of tons). Easydur can for sure satisfy every need, from those of watchmakers to those of the railways sector.

Easydur systems can mount up to 3 load cells (fig. 4) always equipped and ready for use, and the list of accessories and fixtures available is basically endless (not considering the customizations possible).
