25/03/2026 – Cable manufacture / handling / rewind lines
Built for drum logistics, layer quality, and safer changeovers
Rewinding in a cable plant is rarely a simple transfer. It’s a daily production task: splitting master drums into customer lengths, converting drum types, correcting issues, and preparing lots for downstream steps.
With mixed cable constructions, frequent changeovers, and long runs, manufacturers need repeatable package quality and safer, faster handling. Windak’s pay-off, take-up, and rewind lines are designed around those realities – focusing on consistent cable laying, adaptable control for different products, and operator-friendly drum changes with safeguards for longer cycles.
Repeatable precision laying
Particularly in the first layers, which determine the structure of the packaging, consistent wrapping quality depends heavily on where the laying point is in relation to the drum barrel. Windak’s ‘Safe Wind’ laying concept coordinates the laying motion to maintain a controlled cable path as the package builds, supporting uniform layers and predictable pull-off behaviour.
To reduce dependence on individual operator technique, optimised settings can be stored and recalled as recipes, helping manufacturers achieve consistent results across shifts and product changeovers.
Faster, safer drum changes
Drum handling is often where time and risk accumulate. Windak winders use floating pintles to simplify alignment during drum changes and reduce manual repositioning of heavy drums. For drum drive, a tire-drive (including dual-tire options) provides controlled engagement with defined contact pressure, supporting stable rotation and reducing both operational delays and injury risks.
Control that fits mixed products
Modern rewind lines must handle a broad cable range: flexible products, stiff cable types, different diameters, and varying packaging requirements. Windak rewind lines support both tension control and torque control, with switching handled via the operator interface. For improved threading – especially with heavier or stiffer cables – a rewind station concept with tire capstan and precision length measurement can support more controlled, less physically demanding setup.
End protection that’s consistent
After cutting, the cable end is vulnerable to damage and can become a recurring complaint point. Windak’s ‘UW’ stretch-wrap concept secures the cable end with controlled film tension, helping to keep the ends protected and neatly fastened, including for larger or more rigid cables.
Monitoring and setup features that protect uptime
For longer rewinding cycles, Windak lines can integrate active inspection capability that stops the line if damage is detected, supported by a reverse function for inspection and correction.
A production-ready rewinding platform
Windak pay-off, take-up, and rewind lines are designed as production tools – supporting consistent packages, safer changeovers, and reliable operation across a wide variety of drums and cable products.
