Reversing winding line for LV and MV cables

The global demand for energy cables is growing rapidly and steadily. The main reasons for this include: the expansion of renewable energies, as connecting offshore wind farms and solar installations requires new and well-developed transmission grids; the expansion of data centres; and developments in the field of electric mobility.

New factories, electric vehicles and the enormous energy requirements of data centres are driving demand for medium- and high-voltage cables. Depending on the region and cable type, annual growth rates of at least 6–7% are expected over the next few years. Many of these cables are screened and copper-taped cables.

They are manufactured on so-called “ceander lines”, which apply the wire screen in a sinusoidal pattern. After screening and taping, the cables pass directly into the sheathing extrusion line.

SSB is prepared for this trend and offers fully redesigned “reversing winding lines” for screened low- and medium-voltage cables, both in terms of their mechanical design and control technology.

LV and MV cables with a ceandered screen offer the advantage of being easy and safe to install.

SSB’s screening system provides high efficiency, excellent product quality and long operating periods through the use of drums for the copper tape in the taping unit. The components can be moved, allowing flexible integration and use within the complete sheathing line.

The entire system is controlled via a central swivelling touch panel.

The system is designed to apply soft aluminium or copper screening wires to a core – the cable – in a sinusoidal pattern. The wires are secured to the core by wrapping them with copper or aluminium tape.

Main parameters:

(Variations available on customer request)

Line speed: Vmax. = 50m/min.

Core diameter: (cable diameter) 15mm to 70mm

Metal shield: consisting of a maximum of 120 soft copper or aluminium wires with diameters ranging from 0.4mm to 2.5mm, depending on the material

Securing: using copper or aluminium tape 0.1mm to 0.2mm thick and 5mm to 15mm wide.

The system comprises the following components:

1. Wire levelling device

2. Reversing winder

3. Central tape winder

4. Stabilising track

5. Electrical equipment and control system
