Precision finishing for memory wire

Memory wire, especially Nitinol, requires and exceptional high quality surface finish. The challenge is removing drawing residues, lubricants, heat-treatment oxides and scale without damaging the wire or altering tight diameter tolerances.

Wet blasting meets that need. In medical and high-spec industrial applications, the surface condition influences fatigue life, corrosion behaviour, coating adhesion and, critically, cleanliness and consistency.

Using a water-based abrasive slurry, it removes surface contaminants effectively while avoiding aggressive material removal, helping protect the wire’s critical dimensions. The water also cushions the abrasive action compared with dry blasting, reducing the risk of introducing micro-cracks or surface stresses - an important consideration where fatigue performance and corrosion resistance are key.

Just as importantly, wet blasting delivers a smooth, uniform, satin-like finish. That uniformity isn’t only aesthetic: it provides a consistent surface condition that supports downstream processes. For manufacturers applying coatings or carrying out subsequent treatments, wet blasting can improve preparation by delivering a clean, evenly conditioned substrate that promotes better adhesion and more consistent results.

Wet blasting also suits sensitive production environments. Because the process keeps media and removed contamination contained in the water, it produces no airborne dust, unlike dry blasting, supporting cleaner operations and lowering contamination risk, which is particularly relevant in medical device manufacturing.

Of course, repeatability is the real differentiator in precision wire production. Vapormatt’s automatic “Profelis” wet blasting machine is designed specifically for efficient, controlled wire processing, including 360° coverage around the wire and integrated rinsing and drying to streamline production. In one medical wire case study, a manufacturer integrated a “Profelis” system in-line with existing equipment to degrease and rapidly clean Nitinol wire for applications such as catheters, stents, needles, mandrels and surgical instruments, supporting compliance driven quality expectations including ISO and FDA requirements.

For memory wire producers, the value proposition is clear: wet blasting provides thorough contaminant removal, a controlled and uniform finish, better readiness for coatings, and a cleaner process overall - delivered with the consistency modern wire and medical supply chains increasingly demand.
