New standard in high-speed double twist stranding

At the heart of modern steel wire and cable manufacturing lies an ever-present challenge: how to marry production efficiency with uncompromised strand quality. Eurodraw’s “DT (6+1)” double twist stranding machine responds to that challenge with a design that balances power, precision, and uninterrupted operation.

The core of the DT (6+1)’s performance advantage comes from its double twist principle, engineered to provide two strand rotations per single drive revolution. The result is a markedly increased output rate without sacrificing strand consistency – an essential requirement for high-tensile steel applications spanning from structural ropes to reinforcement cables. Configured for 6+1 strand layouts – six outer wires wrapped around a central core – the machine can operate with either S or Z lay direction, giving manufacturers greater flexibility to meet specific product requirements. In the DT (6+1)/400 version, the system is capable of handling wire diameters from 0.34 mm to 1.20 mm, producing finished strand diameters between 1.40 mm and 3.40 mm. It accommodates bare or galvanized high-carbon steel with tensile strengths up to 2,160N/mm², making it a versatile choice for demanding industrial environments. A key design element of the “DT (6+1)” is its internal pay-off cradle, which holds seven coils horizontally and feeds each wire into the stranding zone via precision guide rolls. This configuration ensures a steady wire flow with controlled tension – an important contributor to stable strand geometry. Wire tension is maintained by a mechanical dancer arm paired with a band-brake system, offering simplicity and robustness that reduces routine adjustments and downtime. After the wires are bundled and twisted, they proceed into the Twist Setting Unit (TSU), a dedicated section that stabilizes the twist profile and fine-tunes strand characteristics. Driven independently, the TSU allows speed variation up to ±40% relative to machine speed, which helps optimize strand compactness and mechanical properties. High-quality hardened and polished pulley surfaces reduce wear and ensure smoother, long-term operation. The “DT (6+1)” incorporates a two-wheel capstan drive with belt and gearbox transmission to reliably pull the strand through the production line. The machine’s lay adjustment is achieved through a stepless ratio control between the capstan and flywheel speeds, allowing operators to select lay lengths from 10 to 50 mm via a user-friendly interface. No gear change required. This setup supports maximum linear speeds of 100m/min, with mechanical twist speeds up to 3,600 twists per minute and flywheel speeds as high as 1,800rpm, providing the throughput necessary for modern manufacturing demands.

For products that require higher strand density or enhanced fatigue resistance, the “DT (6+1)” can be configured with an optional compacting station situated before the capstan. This addition allows manufacturers to tailor strand properties for specialized performance criteria. The take-up subsystem is engineered for flexibility, accommodating wooden spools from 315mm to 630mm, as well as metallic spools up to DIN 1000. Motorized tailstocks secure the spools, while an electro-mechanical lifter simplifies loading and unloading. The programmable traverse arm operates on a 3mm to 15mm pitch range, and an automatic diameter compensation feature ensures consistent tension from the first meter of strand to the last – vital for maintaining package quality. Industrial work environments demand both safety and comfort. The “DT (6+1)” is housed within a sound-insulated enclosure, fitted with impact-resistant viewing windows and fully interlocked access panels that prevent inadvertent exposure during motion. Strategically placed sensors detect wire or strand breakages at critical points like the flywheels and capstan, initiating an immediate stop to protect equipment and reduce waste. With a declared noise level of approximately 82dBA, Eurodraw has achieved a remarkably quiet operating profile for a machine in this performance class — a feature that benefits operators and supports modern workplace standards.
