Thread roller for hardened fasteners with computerized-match
There is an increasing demand in the market for thread rolling of pre-hardened fasteners and at the same time there is a severe shortage of qualified operators, a combination that often leads to costly production errors.
To address these challenges, Videx has spent the last three years developing new models of thread rollers which are designed to meet the challenges of rolling hardened fasteners. These new models not only improve performance and extend die life, but also make the machines more user-friendly, helping today’s newer younger generation achieve better results and make fewer mistakes. Here are some of the new features:
Feed control
A highly sensitive feed monitoring system, which is accurate to 0.01mm, is continuously monitoring how each blank is fed into the thread-rolling dies. If a defective blank or incorrect feed is detected, the machine automatically stops with the blank held between the dies, preventing it from rolling through. This protection is essential when working with hardened fasteners, since even a single faulty blank can damage or chip the dies.
Computerised feed
Flat-die thread rollers have only a single start point, which requires die replacement once that point wears out. Planetary (rotary) machines have multiple start points, because they use feed cams, blanks are fed at only 1, 2, 3 or 4 fixed positions, limiting usable die surface. Videx’s new system evaluates all available starts around the rotary die and intelligently switches the start position during production, maximising die usage. This innovation alone can extend die life by 40% to 50%.
Computerised match
A large coloured screen is available with a built-in “Thread Library”. Operators simply select the required thread size and start the thread matching process. Using Videx’s optic system, the operator determines the necessary thread correction of the rotary die toward the segment and the servo system sets the right match (99.9% accuracy) accordingly. This user-friendly system simplifies setup, reduces guesswork, and ensures accurate, repeatable results and thus, better threads and lower die costs.
Zero-taper mechanism
ES-series models feature a rigid, closed-frame design that minimises spindle flex during thread rolling. A large upper spindle bearing further stabilises the spindle, preventing deflection and ensuring parallel threads, faster setup times, and a longer die life.
Large diameter thread rolling
For threads larger than 16mm, Videx offers models with a feed system that is also determining the feed stroke and the feed-finger speed, based on the blank diameter and the spindle RPM. These additional features shorten the setup time, ensure better feed, and result in a longer die life.
Head position
A sensor-based system continuously monitors head height during rolling. If a blank enters too high, too low or unmatched, the machine immediately stops, protecting both tooling and finished parts.
Defect detection monitoring
A built-in pressure-monitoring system checks each blank entering the dies. If an undersized or oversized blank enters, the machine automatically stops before the blank can damage the dies or mix with the good parts.
