Automated production of wire based stent implants
Stent implants are in high demand globally due to the increasing prevalence of cardiovascular disease and cancer. Current manufacturing processes involve manual work steps, resulting in high costs. At the Institut für Textiltechnik of RWTH Aachen University, automated approaches for atraumatic stent production were developed and implemented, including automated single-thread braiding and atraumatic multi-thread braiding. These automated processes demonstrated mechanical properties comparable to manual production while significantly reducing manufacturing costs. The research highlights the potential for cost-effective and customer-oriented production, addressing the challenges faced by stent manufacturers in a competitive and regulated market.
