As WIRE marks its 75th anniversary, BB Spring Technology looks back on a journey of innovation that reflects the technological evolution of the wire industry. The company’s engineering heritage dates back to one of Italy’s pioneering manufacturers of spring coiling machinery: Bobbio SRL.

The story of Bobbio SRL began in 1948, when Benedetto Bobbio founded the company in Rovellasca, near Como. Initially specializing in textile machinery, the company soon expanded its expertise into Spring Coiling technology. Inspired by the elastic properties of steel wire, Bobbio recognized its industrial potential and, in 1951, designed and delivered his first Spring Coiling Machine to an Italian customer. This achievement marked the beginning of an engineering journey that would help shape the spring manufacturing industry for decades to come.

In 1982, Bobbio presented its first electronically controlled Spring Coiling Machine at “wire Basel”, alongside many of the world’s leading manufacturers, demonstrating the growing importance of digital technology in spring production. Intuitive operation and production efficiency became the foundation of Bobbio’s philosophy, principles that continue to guide BB Spring Technology today.

In 2014, former Bobbio technicians and engineers founded BB Spring Technology with the initial goal of supporting the extensive installed base of Bobbio machines still operating around the world. Building decades of technical expertise, the company soon expanded beyond service activities to design and manufacture its own generation of Spring Coiling Machines, combining Bobbio’s engineering heritage with modern technologies and innovative manufacturing solutions.

Today, BB Spring Technology is the only Italian manufacturer developing machines capable of processing wire diameters of up to 25mm, with solutions reaching 30mm for annealed wire, while also offering dedicated technologies for smaller springs and highly customized applications. The original software philosophy has been continuously refined, with a strong emphasis on intuitive machine operation, production flexibility and customer-oriented solutions. The combination of experienced Bobbio specialists and a new generation of skilled professionals has created an environment where innovation is driven by both heritage and fresh ideas.
