Primetals Technologies pioneers cooling system optimization
Primetals Technologies has taken industrial cooling research to a new level with a state-of-the-art heat?transfer test facility in Linz, Austria.

The system visualizes the hot strand during the continuous casting process and enables precise analysis of temperature reduction under real?world conditions. With adjustable nozzles, variable angles, and rotation capability, the setup faithfully replicates every phase of secondary cooling.
A measuring plate equipped with dozens of temperature probes records heat distribution throughout the test cycle, generating detailed transfer maps. These data sets are used to improve nozzle design and integrate directly into the company’s Dynacs 3D online model, ensuring highly accurate temperature control in steel casting.
The facility supports optimization for both Primetals Technologies and third?party casters, and is open to research institutions. Backed by the COMET?K2 “Center for Symbiotic Mechatronics” at the Linz Center of Mechatronics, the project combines industrial innovation with academic precision to advance energy?efficient cooling solutions across the metals industry.
