15/02/2023 – Optimize ferrochrome production capacity

Outokumpu restarts the 3rd ferrochrome furnace earlier than planned

In mid February, Outokumpu restarted one of its three ferrochrome furnaces. Due to high electricity prices, the furnace was temporarily shut down in September with plans to restart by the end of the first quarter of 2023 at the earliest.

The optimisation of ferrochrome production based on the price of electricity continues for all three furnaces, and the production capacity remains at 50% to 60% of normal.

“The restart of the third ferrochrome gives us more possibilities for optimising the production in the current situation in the electricity market. With the restart of the furnace the employees can return to work at the ferrochrome operations. The majority of them have been working in Outokumpu’s stainless steel operations in Tornio,” said Martti Sassi, President of the Business Area Ferrochrome.
